Artist's Description
Winner of the April 2015 contest for Travel Photos, presented by the Fine Art America's Jet Setter Group.
A Marina dock on San Francisco. These beautiful watercraft are for hire, on a personal tour of the San Francisco Bay and the Golden Gate Bridge. The colorful paint not only adds beauty, but also protects the boats from the ravages of salt water.
I like the red one. How about you?
About Dick Hudson
A retired helicopter pilot and Vietnam Veteran. Live in Kissimmee, Florida.... a beautiful place, with lots of photo opportunity. I photograph what I like, and it could be something different every day. This has become something of a quest for me. I want to become a Fine Artist. Seems like something that a person would do from their youth. Art School, Apprentice, Studios, etc. I am 72, and don't have time for all that. The digital camera made it easier for me, and for everyone else. It is hard to differentiate from other artists. I can see what they do, and learn how to do it, but the real prize is to develop my own style, and exceed my own standards. Getting better at my own standard is hard enough. I have learned so much in the...

Dick, I love the contrast and lighting you have captured in this photo. I would not change a thing. There is a wonderful mystery to this piece and it makes me want to look around in the background for the details.
Dick Hudson replied:
THANK YOU. In this case the detailed background important. The Marina is a living and working place. All of the tools and hoists are part of it ... and just as important as the boats in this habitat.
Mitch Shindelbower
Nicely done Dick ! l/f
Dick Hudson replied:
Thank you, Mitch.

Thank you, Kathi. The colors drew me to the boats.
Kathi Mirto
Wonderful patterns and rhythm Dick, love how you've upped the warm colors that are striking against the other wise dark shadows, very interesting and charming work! fl
Charla Dury
Amazing how they line up just for you, isn't it?
Dick Hudson replied:
It is my special power.
Pattie Frost
Oh what a lovely photo! I love the "pop" of colors, it just makes this photo crisp and beautiful to the eye! l/f
Dick Hudson replied:
Thank you, Pattie. The colors called to me and demanded that I take this one.
Emmy Vickers
Ooops, two spelling corrections below. Under comment number 4, middle board should read middle boat. And the second to last sentence Your quite the talented.....should read You're quite the talented..... Sorry.
Dick Hudson replied:
Thank you, Emmy. And I neber eber make speling mistaks.

Dick, another great scene. I have read all the comments before me and would like to offer a few thoughts/recommendations. (1) I agree with Janal K., great symmetry. (2) Mark Fuge mentioned saturation and bright colors. I agree with him in that the orange and red are a little too bright which makes the scene look a little less natural. I would just tone the brightness down ever-so-slightly. (3) My eye went directly to the red spot on the middle boat. I'm not sure what that is. I would take some of the brightness out or delete it altogether, it's a distraction. (4) I would also slightly lighten the bottom of the middle board to better see the full name of the boat Nina.... (5) Lastly, I would brighten the water slightly as well, make it look a little less shadowed. Not a lot, just a smidgeon. Great work, colors, and detail. On a separate note, I love your story and artwork Dick. I first visited some of your other works (commented, tweeted, fb, etc) and am now following you. Your quite the talented photographer. Keep up the great work! And thanks so much for your years of service!! Hugs.
Dick Hudson replied:
Thank you, Emmy. I appreciate your comments and advice.

Great colors and composition. I like the increasing intensity (from left to right ) of the boat colors. The piles to me are (visually) parts of the boat and do not distract (for my taste). The only thing I would do is darken the, to me, distracting and too busy back behind the boats, by either darkening it or 'blur' the sharpness of it, - and perhaps lightening the water in front of the boats a bit. :-)
Dick Hudson replied:
Thanks for your review, Hartmut. With these colors there are so many options. That is the joy of processing.
Adria Trail
I like the high contrast and bright colors which set the time as near dark, and that left pier helps put the viewer on a dock. A beautiful photo!
Dick Hudson replied:
The colors are what drew me to the boats. Plus it reminded me of Gilligan's Island, and their 3-hour tour.

Now this is a very lovely image as strickly as a suggestion from a personal point view... I would agree with Mark that removing the piling without cropping. I would recommend to slightly tone down the yellow and orange and enhance the the blues.... the yellow is affecting the coloring in the water outside of the reflection. My eye goes straight to the last boat, I am not sure if that is the intent; however it reduces the presence of the first two boats.... very color and interesting image...
Dick Hudson replied:
Thank you. It is so difficult to make an image look like the eye sees it. It was a great memory.
Mark Fuge
I like the image as shot with two comments, both personal and suggestions not critical. The first being that I would have moved a little to the right to eliminate the piling on the left and included the name of the last boat on the left. The other boat names are given and it would have tied the theme a little, in my view. The second, while I know people like saturated colors, it was a little too much for my taste. The fluorescent colors hit my eyes bright when the image came up! ; >) I use to use fluorescent paint and tape for marking survey points for that reason. But like the other comment, it is a personal thing. I would have toned it down a little to make it more natural, though I understand others like it bright as possible. Otherwise a great shot.
Dick Hudson replied:
Thanks, Mark. This was a quick target of opportunity, and the walking crowd on the marina were kind enough to give me a chance for the shot. I loved the colors, and wanted to make them the focus of the image.
Janal Koenig
You have a beautiful image with symmetry. I really would love to see more of the reflection, in doing that your eye will move around the photo.
Dick Hudson replied:
I agree, Janal. There was limited space. I had another version with more reflection, but chose this one because of the presentation of the colors. Thank you.
Laurie Search
This is really lovely, Dick!!! :)))
Dick Hudson replied:
Thanks so much, Laurie.
Christopher Brown
Beautiful shot! Nice composition and colors.
Dick Hudson replied:
Thank you, Christopher. The colors drew me to the spot.
Rosalie Scanlon
Great image with wonderful colors, but would like to see just the foreground boats.
Dick Hudson replied:
I understand. I might do something creative with just the 3 boats, but at the time I liked the busy background. These critiques are helping me to learn how to better apply composition.
Debbie Oppermann
Great work! I would like to see just a slightly lighter shadow and possibly the wooden pier gone but as Rahdne said, it is not too distracting - terrific clarity and colors!
Dick Hudson replied:
Thank you, Debbie. I was mesmerized by the horizontal color bands. I agree that the shadows were dark, but I kind of liked the contrasts of the colors and dark. I am still honing this skill and appreciate these critiques.
Kristina Rinell
Love the depth, clarity even in the boats on the other side of the dock. Colors are amazing and I like the composition, too. Only thing that I'm not too fond of is the darkness in the shade, would have liked a little less contrast between light and dark. l/f/tw/pin
Dick Hudson replied:
Thank you, Christina. I appreciate your critique, especially because I am still trying to figure out my "style".
Cynthia Guinn
Love the light and colors here Dick...v/t
Dick Hudson replied:
Thank you, Cynthia
Honey Behrens
Fantastic composition and contrast of light! I love the amount that you chose to boost the saturation. This capture makes me want to go to the docks!
Dick Hudson replied:
Thank you, Honey. I am learning that some like a lot of saturation, and others don't. That is style. I am still working on mine. Your critique helps.
Marta Robin Gaughen
Congrats on your winner of a photograph. The color really pops!
Dick Hudson replied:
Thank you, Marta.
Rahdne Zola
Dick, this is a great shot of this trio of boats. The post processing is nice with just the right amount of color saturation to make the boat trim really pop. I would like to have seen this without the wood from the pier in the lower left corner; however, it's not overly distracting as is, so no harm done, really. A beautiful shot overall and congratulations on winning the Travel Photos contest! =)
Dick Hudson replied:
Thank you. I agree, and wished that I could have gotten the name of the third boat. That pier was in the way, and I would have lost my composition if I moved right. Choices, choices, choices. That is what make this frustrating and also fun.
Michael Scott
Now this is an interesting image! First, the colors are amazing! I love the highlights in the foreground and shadows in the back! Fantastic work!
Dick Hudson replied:
Thanks so much, Michael.
Karl Anderson
Love the light and shadows ! Great colors
Dick Hudson replied:
Thanks, Karl. The colors drew me to the image.
